Nyjer Bird Feeder Tubes, at BirdFeedersOnly.com, are designed to hold a popular bird seed known as Nyjer. Nyjer, sometimes mistakenly called Thistle, is enjoyed by some wild birds due to its excellent nutritional value that includes high fat and protein content.
Nyjer Bird Seed looks like small grains of wild rice and is popular among gold finches, house finches, purple finches, towhees, pine siskins, juncos, mourning doves, many sparrows, titmice, and redpoles. However, not all of these birds will visit Nyjer Bird Feeder Tubes.
The name “Nyjer” was trademarked by the Wild Bird Feeding Industry in 1998 in an effort to differentiate this highly desirable bird seed from thistle seed or niger seed, which are more commonly known to grow obnoxious thistle weeds. On the contrary, Nyjer is not a thistle weed at all, however, some birds, including goldfinches, do eat seeds from the thistle plant. However, nyjer is highly more desirable than thistle.
Nyjer Bird Feeder Tubes are designed to exclusively hold Nyjer bird seed, which is sold separate of other bird seeds. Nyjer Bird Feeders have smaller ports that reduce spillage. However, some spillage still occurs which allows larger birds that are unable to utilize a Nyjer Bird Feeder to take the “scraps”. It should be noted that some bird seed mixes do include thistle in them, but because the other parts of the bird seed mix are generally large, these mixes require a more multi-purpose bird feeder.
