Cardinal

Cardinal

The Cardinal is a very popular bird that is mostly found east of the Rockies, though some live in California, Arizona and Mexico. Its popularity is shown through the fact that seven states have adopted this bird as their State Bird. The male is a bright red and the female is a light brown. Cardinals are usually found in wooded areas and their numbers have recently increased in part because of human efforts to ensure that Cardinals have adequate resources for continued survival.     Learn More>>>>

Cardinal (Cont.)

Cardinal (Cont.)

Cardinal males will fiercely defend their territories. They have been seen spending hours fighting their reflections in windows or mirrors! The males are a bright red color because female cardinals are attracted to bright red.

A pair of cardinals will build a nest together and the female will lay eggs. The eggs will hatch approximately two weeks later. After the baby Cardinals hatch, the male and female parents will equally feed the babies. Two weeks after they hatch the new born Cardinals will fledge (leave the nest).

The Cardinal is named after the red robes worn by the Roman Catholic Cardinals.
