Want to know what kind of butterfly garden plants are available? You can create your own butterfly garden design or butterfly garden plan by checking out the Attract Butterflies (and Hummingbirds) With Plants chart. Be sure to plant both Host Plants and Nectar Plants. Nectar plants should offer a continuous nectar supply from approximately April to October (may vary slightly in your location). This chart breaks down information to plants attracted by specific types of butterflies as well as plants that do well in pots, hanging baskets, etc.

BUTTERFLY HOUSES – Using a butterfly house, such as the ones shown to the right, can help to increase your chances of attracting butterflies. Place your butterfly house near where they are more likely to come across it in places such as:

near butterfly plants (Butterfly Bush is best)
away from direct sun light
near water
near a butterfly feeder
sheltered from wind
mount on a tree or post
place bananas out to attract fruit flies which will then be consumed by butterflies for protein
put out a slice of watermelon or over ripe fruit to also attract butterflies.

Mounting a nesting box whether it be for birds, butterflies, lady bugs etc. requires patience. Once they find you, you will be heavily rewarded!

Homemade Butterfly Nectar can be placed in a Butterfly Feeder such as this one from Wingspan. Butterfly Nectar should be mixed with a ratio of 9 parts water to 1 part sugar. Using boiling (or hot) water will ensure that the sugar more adequately and quickly dissolves. Cool the mixture before placing in your feeder and store the rest in the refrigerator for later use. The nectar you place in the feeder should be replaced at least once a week and more often in warm weather because the solution will spoil. Avoid putting your butterfly feeder in direct as that will only speed up the fermentation (spoiling) process.
